Roasted potatoes don’t need cheese, gravy or a fryer to make their case. Give them enough heat to crisp the outside while the middle stays fluffy, and suddenly the supposedly simple side is disappearing from the pan before dinner gets served. They represent the no-gimmicks camp in this bracket. Against a loaded baked potato, it’s restraint versus excess. Against French fries, it’s oven versus fryer. And against mashed potatoes, Sunday dinner gets awkward fast. Roasted potatoes may enter without the flash of tots or potato skins, but sometimes crispy edges, seasoning and actual potato flavor are enough. Would you take them over the heavyweights?
