Wicked might be the most defended musical on this entire list—and that’s exactly why it’s dangerous. It’s emotional, loud, and built for big reactions. But let’s be honest: the plot is thinner than fans admit. Against Sweeney Todd, it feels like a simplified version of something deeper. Against Phantom, it trades iconic music for crowd-pleasing moments. And yet, people ride for Wicked like it’s untouchable. “Defying Gravity” does a lot of heavy lifting.
