Whitney Houston

There are Whitney Houston performances where you already know the note is coming and it still feels ridiculous when she hits it.

That's her superpower in this field. Other contenders can overwhelm you with choreography, costumes, reinvention or spectacle. Whitney could just stand there and sing. Suddenly everybody else's bag of tricks looked a little unnecessary.

And this wasn't technical brilliance trapped in a niche. The songs were enormous. The voice crossed borders. The charisma made vocal fireworks feel like pop music rather than homework.

Mariah Carey is the obvious bloodbath: two generational voices with very different weapons. Beyoncé brings a more complete modern stage package. But neither comparison makes Whitney easy to dismiss.

If “pop star” requires spectacle, she gives up ground. If one extraordinary human voice can be the spectacle, Whitney becomes terrifying.
