Open the hockey record book and Wayne Gretzky starts looking less like a player than a typo nobody corrected. The goals were devastating. The assists were worse. He saw plays forming before everybody else entered the picture.

Gretzky’s case is statistical separation. Plenty of athletes dominated their sports; very few built a gap this rude between themselves and the field. Jordan has more global aura. Messi played the world’s biggest game. Gretzky supporters do not need the fame contest. They have numbers that make other legends look merely excellent.

The obvious resistance is hockey’s reach. Many voters did not grow up watching it, and emotional qualification matters in a cross-sport fight. But unfamiliarity is not a rebuttal. Against Brady, Gretzky asks whether championships outweigh individual control. Against Phelps, he asks whether sustained league destruction beats Olympic bursts. If being the GOAT means making second place feel miles away, does anybody have a cleaner argument than the Great One?
