“Wassup”

“Wassup”

“Wassup?!” belongs in the Greatest 90s Commercial Catchphrase of All Time conversation because it completely escaped the commercial and took over real life. That’s the gold standard. If you were alive in the late 90s, you heard people screaming this at school, on the phone, across parking lots, and probably in places where it made absolutely no sense.

The genius of “Wassup?!” is that it barely even feels like advertising anymore. Budweiser accidentally created a national reflex. Compared to something polished like “Just Do It,” this thing felt dumb, loud, and weirdly authentic. That’s why it spread faster. And unlike “Got Milk?,” which stayed tied to celebrity ads, “Wassup?!” became something people made their own.

You could argue it burned out faster than some other contenders. Fair. But peak-for-peak? Few catchphrases hit harder. Put “Wassup?!” vs “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” in a head-to-head battle and watch millennials lose their minds trying to pick a winner.
