After reading The Witches, you might never look at a woman wearing gloves quite the same way again. Roald Dahl took an ordinary hotel, filled it with secretly monstrous witches, and created one of the creepiest stories many kids ever encountered. The Grand High Witch is genuinely frightening, the transformations are grotesque, and the boy at the center of it all has to outsmart enemies who are much bigger and more powerful than he is. Unlike the playful magic of The BFG, this is childhood fantasy with real teeth. Matilda lets kids get revenge on awful adults, but The Witches makes them wonder which adults they can trust. Is this the Dahl book that deserves to win?
