You're laughing with your friends. Maybe somebody drops something. Then comes the knock. Mr. Heckles has arrived to inform you that you're disturbing his birds. He doesn't have birds.

Every apartment building needs the neighbor who believes everyone else is too loud, too happy, and generally existing incorrectly. Heckles owns that job. He lurks downstairs from Monica and Rachel like a human noise complaint, appearing whenever the gang gets comfortable enough to forget he's there.

He doesn't have Kramer's charisma or Wilson's wisdom, but that's the fun of the matchup. Heckles represents a neighbor archetype almost everyone recognizes: the person who makes you tiptoe across your own floor.

Against Newman, crankiness becomes an art form. Against Flanders, the personality clash is ridiculous. You probably don't want Heckles downstairs—but would Friends be better without him banging on the ceiling?
