Face/Off has one of the dumbest premises ever approved by a major studio, which is exactly why people adore it. Two enemies literally swap faces and then spend the rest of the movie aggressively overacting at each other. Incredible decision-making.
The reason this movie works so well in the league is because people can’t agree on whether it’s secretly brilliant or gloriously stupid. Fans of Con Air argue that Face/Off is too polished to count as “bad.” Meanwhile, Batman & Robin supporters think this thing takes itself way too seriously for how absurd it is.
And honestly, both sides have a point.
John Woo somehow turned slow-motion doves, dual pistols, and identity theft into emotional drama. That should not work. Yet here we are. This movie has huge “one more scene before bed” energy because every sequence somehow tops the last one.
If this matchup bracket turns into a Nic Cage civil war, nobody should be surprised.
