Bedroom Clap — The Conjuring

Carolyn is trapped in darkness, searching for the source of a child’s voice. She lights a match. The flame gives her barely enough comfort to keep moving.

Then two hands clap beside her head.

The scare works because it takes the stupidest possible sound—a playful little clap—and makes it feel like a death sentence. You do not see a monster. You do not get an explanation. Your imagination fills the darkness faster than the movie ever could. After this scene, every open closet becomes suspicious.

Against the Red-Faced Demon, it is restraint versus visual assault. Against the Tall Man, it is unseen presence versus impossible human shape. The Bedroom Clap is also a perfect test of Rewatch Power: you know exactly when those hands are arriving, yet your shoulders still lock up.
